Lana Del Rey uses a simple, eye catching and clear design which denotes who the artist is to its target audience, this provides direct contact, helping to provoke the reader to read the information below. Unlike the majority of rest of the magazines I found it uses a realistic image, this proves unconventional. The advert uses large, centrally framed and bold typography at the top of the page. The album name also follows this design and they stand out using contrasting colours. The design uses a limited palette of blue and white, with contrast via the reds with the hair and lips. These stand out in a provocative manner with red being a symbol of love while blue and white being a more innocent tone.
Foals have taken an indie approach to their design. They use bold, centralised typography, beneath which is the information they are getting across to the reader through engagement via the black title which is contrasting to the basic blue and fairly subtle background. They use a group photo of the band which adds to the connection between the band and their audience / reader. The image itself seems to use a 'Reyes' filter over the top which makes the image more grainy and aesthetically appealing. At the bottom of the page it portrays information regarding performance and contact. This has proved so far to be conventional.
This is an example of an ODESZA magazine advert. It is very effective and is a signifier of electronic music. The design is quite complex but very effective. Charles and I could re create something similar but we will assess this when we can balance this based upon how much time we have remaining. The design seems to have almost a displaced oil pattern, with 'Gotham' font centrally framed both vertically and laterally. The design follows their general convention of a surreal concoction. It also consists of added information including the date and location of what it is advertising (Red Rocks festival). The colours are very oringinal and eye catchig with an almost satin effect. Its a deep red / purple, which stands out with good contrast to the white titles. This design however doesn't include their logo which isn't conventional for Odesza.
This is another example of an ODESZA magazine advert. The titles are again Gotham, and also seemed to be spaced apart slightly. The image seems to have 3 layers which has been conventional of their products, the opacity has been lowered and they have been placed on top of each other. The image is aesthetically pleasing and is fairly soft visually with the pastel like orange filter. With regards to extra information it includes who else will be performing and when the event is taking place. Once again they don't seem to use website URL's or links to social media, ODESZA very much take a 'less is more' approach and focus on keeping the design simple and clean rather than scattering it with information which reduces the aesthetic aspect.
Overall these designs all offer different things which sit within their genres. From this research I need to decide what approach I wish to take; Do I include the contact information of the duo, or do I follow what they have done which is produce a more simple design? Do I use a simple, 'less is more' design or alternatively produce something more complex to display various skills? Shall I include their logo or not as they haven't in all of theirs? Should I follow the same design pattern as I used on my digipak or do something separate? All these questions will be answered when myself and Charles get together and discuss through them.
